I collect examples of creative ways to make money for my websites, and I recently found a fun one in a great little story I read. It was written by a man who had certain survival talents and decided to demonstrate them by being dumped in the middle of a large city with no money. By that evening he had a nice hotel room and some money in his pocket. Some of the things he did deserve the warning, “Don’t try this at home,” but they are good examples of the possible anyhow.

As I recall (I may get a few details wrong), he first went to the drive-through windows of a few fast food restaurants to collect the change that inevitably drops on the ground as it is passed from cars to cashiers. Once he had a dollar put together he went to a store and exchanged it for four quarters. These he used to buy a newspaper from a coin-operated paper box, but he actually took all sixteen papers from it. He claims to have repaid the newspaper company in full after this experiment.

He sold the sixteen papers at full retail on the street, for a total of sixteen dollars. With that he went to a bar he already had in mind and ordered the cheapest beer. After talking to the bartender for a while he made what is commonly called a “bar bet” with him for the next beer. I don’t recall the trick, but there are many you can learn from books that cover these things. I can make a nickel go through a hole in a piece of paper the size of a dime, for example, without tearing the paper. Then there are the usual card tricks that can be learned with a bit of practice.

In any case, he won his next beer and then got a few of the other people in the bar interested in his tricks. He made a ten dollar bet or two, which he naturally won. As the evening progressed he found other “targets” who were willing to bet more. By that night he had enough to pay for a nice hotel and still had $5 or so in his pocket.

More Creative Ways To Make Money

You may have heard about the man who turned a paper clip into a house a few years ago. It was a large colorful paper clip, and he traded it for an antique door knob, and that for something else, and so on, doing a little better on each trade. Within about a year or so he had traded up to a house. That was his goal, and he meant it as his home, but he certainly could sell it, making this a very creative way to make money. Here are a few more.

A friend of mine cut cows out of plywood, painted them and sold them in his front yard.

I was having trouble selling an ebook so I gave it away by email a chapter at a time, making money off the ads on the website pages where the chapters were hosted, quadrupling the income from the book.

Today I read about a pet detective that uses trained tracking hounds to locate lost pets.

We met a man in Boulder Colorado who juggled burning bowling pins and other things while riding a unicycle. He then took up a collection from the audience, which looked to be about $50 after his twenty-minute show.

I recently read about people who are getting old clothing from thrift stores for a dollar or so per item and selling them on Ebay for ten to forty times that. The key is that they use dyes, sequins and more to “dress them up” into something interesting to wear.

A brother of a friend discovered that he can sell old books by adding his own commentary or other content and converting them into Kindle downloads. He chooses books that no longer have a copyright, and sells them cheap (he gets a share of each sale). Kindle is an ebook reader created by Amazon, and anyone can become an author or publisher for free.

There are dozens more creative ways to make money that I could list off the top of my head. Then there are all the ones I haven’t heard of yet. Why not pick one out or invent your own and start having fun making money?

College is a good way to meet a slew of new and diverse people, get the degree that will further your career options and gain some independence from living on your own. College is also a great place to drain your life savings. Living at home is nice because it’s all free, but when you head off to college, prepare your debit card for some friction because it’s going to get used quite a bit. Everything costs money in college, from the dorms to the tuition and extra cheese on a pizza. Cutting back and learning to save can be dismal, but fortunately college is all about the experience. This is no time to start learning to save money, so use this as guide to understand the very best ways to lose money on the road to a college degree.

The easiest way to waste a few extra dollars is to avoid keeping track of the balance on your checking account and use your debit card often. Sure, overdraft fees will pile up and you will probably owe the bank a couple hundred dollars, but that’s no problem! Luckily, your debit card will likely be accepted even if you don’t have the actual funds in the bank. The bank is as helpful as anyone at helping you lose money, so just keep swiping and accumulating those fees. And for bonus points, simply toss out the bank statement you receive each month. Let your debit card be the only source of correspondence between you and your bank.

Another great way to slowly siphon money from your bank account is to drink it up. Everyone knows that college is the best place to pick up a drinking habit, so don’t be left out of the fun. Hang out at bars and clubs where the alcohol is the most expensive and be sure to leave a decent tip for the bartender. If you have a taste for beer, become a connoisseur and get choosy. Pick the most pricey of the beer options and remember that expensive means quality. Even better if you prefer liquor, fancy cocktails cost quite a bit more. If you’re cheap, you can get beer for a couple bucks, but it is near impossible to get a cosmopolitan for less than five dollars, so keep that in mind when ordering. If frat parties are more your cup of tea, or tequila, bring a twelve-pack of your own and offer to share for a couple of games of beer pong. Again remember, the more costly the beer, the better it will taste.

After you have successfully spent all your graduation money on booze, you will have to open your wallet for the academic costs of college. You will need to purchase the books necessary for each class you will be taking. At all costs, avoid the used books section. It is stocked with the lousy old left over books from last semester. They are probably written in, highlighted by previous students and at least $30 cheaper than the new books. If you are spending thousands of dollars to receive an elite education, you will need to spring for the newest books. You would not carry a ragged briefcase with a new suit or wear running shoes with a prom dress, so why study out of crummy old books when listening to your professor give a sparkling, and rather riveting lecture? At the end of the semester you will be pleased to have spent the extra money for such an extraordinary book that you will likely never crack open again. Finally, when the class ends, do not even think of selling your books back to the bookstore. Instead, put them on a bookcase in your room where they will look extremely prestigious next to your collection of magazines, bowls of half-eaten noodles and dirty socks.

It becomes even easier to lose money once you have begun your sophomore year in college. Most colleges only require freshmen to live on campus, after which point you are free to take up residence in any one of the many overpriced apartments and rental homes in the area. That being said, it is not enough just to rent out an apartment that costs more in a month than your parent’s monthly mortgage payment, it is imperative that you live alone. If you choose not to live with any pesky roommates, you will be in charge of paying not only rent, but also electric, gas, water and anything else that isn’t covered by the rent payment. Food is also your responsibility, which is great because there will not be anyone in the house to eat your leftover Chinese.

You will also be able to choose a decorating theme for the entire space without any argument from anyone but your landlord. When you receive those annoying bills in the mail, make sure you give them enough time sitting on your kitchen table to forget about them. Late fees will build up, but if you catch it before the power company turns of your electric everything will be okay. Finally, the key to losing excess amounts of money in an apartment is to waste as much energy as possible. Keep on the lights, take hour-long, extra hot showers and keep the thermostat at 80 degrees during the winter and you will be in debt in no time. Just imagine the smile you will have when you begin getting calls from a collection agency. Collection agencies are particularly friendly and their calls will make you feel like you are finally an adult.

When bills start piling up, the best thing you can do is get a credit card. Don’t waste your time researching interest or annual rates. Go ahead and sign up for the credit card that shows up in your mailbox proclaiming that “You’re Approved!” You can use that plastic godsend to pay off any outstanding debts and worry about paying the balance later. This is another time to casually forget about the bills that appear each month. If you’re late you’ll get to pay up to $50 extra in late fees which should go nicely with any other accumulating debts.

Another good way to rack up the traditional, American credit card debt is to go over your limit. Unfortunately, credit cards sometimes won’t let you go over your limit as easily as debit cards. However, if you can trick your card into letting you spend an extra ten dollars, you’ll also be lucky enough to spend at least an additional $25 in overage fees. Credit cards are important, so make sure you always carry it with you and use it as often as you can. Remember that credit cards give you credit that you can use when buying a car, a house or any other large investment. When you’re looking for a loan, you want the bank to know that you know how to handle money.

Of course, the easiest way to lose money is to follow the above instructions, but also refrain from getting a job. College is about learning and you can’t do that when you’re spending all your extra time making money. It is easiest to rely on your relatives for the occasional check, money-stuffed birthday card or “tuition loan” to help you get by. Of course, as previously discussed, if there is something you need, simply use your credit or debit card and worry about the damage to your bank account later.

There are a million other ways to lose money when you are in college, so use your imagination and get creative. You will find easier and more exciting ways in a short time. After your four years are over, you could be having so much fun that you sign up for another two years of excessive spending. In any case, after strictly following this guide for a few months, you should have no problem making it your daily routine. Finally, if you should find yourself looking for a new way to lose money, try tossing $20 bills directly into the toilet and flushing them down.

For more than 3 years, I was the owner of The Doors Music Pub in Chiang Mai. I never forget the regular customers, who were mostly backpackers or young people who appreciated good music and a hassle-free and laid-back atmosphere. Many of them stayed in Chiang Mai for 3 months and when visiting my bar, they always told me that the life I lived is what they could only dream of.

Some of them even became determined to start a bar of their own, wanting to permanently return to Chiang Mai as soon as they had saved a nice stash of money back home. Usually I just talked along with them, and I knew it was just bar talk. Opening a successful pub is a hell of a job. The competition is severe and often Thai law does not protect your business.

It is more than 4 years ago when I finally decided to close my music pub, not because I didn’t earn enough money but mainly due to issues I was too fed up to cope with any longer. From all these customers with their brilliant ideas, not one soul returned. I guess it was not that easy for them to leave their family and friends and start a new life on the other side of the world.

I truly fully enjoyed each day of my pub’s existence and I can say without doubt that it was the best time of my life. It was so cool sharing my passion for The Doors’ timeless music and Jim Morrison’s poetry with so many, young and old free-spirited people and enthusiastic fans coming from all over the globe. Online Chiang Mai nightlife resource

Another pleasure was working together with my motivated team of three beautiful and spontaneous young Akha ladies. These girls were reliable and dedicated until the last day my pub was open. Sure! It was also neat to get slightly drunk many nights, together with new mates, and play the visitors’ requested tracks all night. Twice every year, I still meet three customers who I became good friends with during the time I had my pub.

Unfortunately, there are also negative things about running a bar which occasionally I had to deal with. There were wasted customers who behaved disrespectfully towards my staff. Some customers stole music books, ashtrays and even removed posters from the wall. Sometimes it was very hard to make loaded customers leave when it was closing time and once in a while there were stingy customers who managed to sneak out without paying the bill.

The Thai police is another topic which deserves to be mentioned here. Three different kinds of policemen used to pay my pub regular visits. Every month, a policemen dressed in civilian clothes came to collect the money I ‘owned’ him for ‘protection’. The first time he came by, he told me what day of the month I could expect him and the amount of money I had to pay. After the first meeting, the officer – always wearing sunglasses – never spoke again. He just looked at me while ticking his pen against the wooden bar. Well, I understood the silent message.

The bar next to me was run by two Thai girls and they had severe financial problems. After not paying the police for 2 months, they were forced to close the bar until they could pay their debt. One day a group of Thais started to play cards in their bar and only a few minutes later two policemen suddenly popped in and ‘arrested’ the law-breaking gamblers while the owners were ordered to close their joint and step into a police car.

Another officer from the tourist police visited my bar almost every Saturday at the end of his shift. It seemed he was very interested in one of my staff and always gave her compliments about her beautiful face and perfect body. He even gave her his phone number and asked if she was willing to go out with him sometime. He always drank several Thai whiskies but never paid for the drinks when he left, saying that I could ask him for help if I ever had any problems.

Finally, two times per year my bar got unannounced invaded by a group of very rude policemen. These men opened every drawer and cupboard, checked the ownership documents, cigarettes and whiskey license and my staff’s ID cards. One of them always had a long phone conversation with my Thai wife, who officially owned the bar. The usual questioning I had to undergo lasted for 1 hour. Questions included; why is your Thai wife not here? Do you have work permit? Do you serve customers? How much salary do you pay your staff? Why don’t you employ Thai girls (‘my girls’ being Akha hill tribe girls)? Each time they told me that if they ever saw me serving one customer, I would have to pay a huge fine.

I can happily say that running The Doors Music Pub was the most exciting time of my life, and I don’t regret one single day that my pub was open. Extensive Chiang Mai travel info I would even consider opening another pub again one day. If you’re not demoralised, why not go for it and open that special Chiang Mai bar.

Everyone uses can and bottle koozies for keeping beverages cold. Most people have collected several of these koozies in their homes from weddings, picnics and even from their employers since companies have lately started giving away koozies as promotional materials to customers, employees and suppliers. This results in lots of koozies getting collected in homes everywhere. Instead of throwing them away, here is a way in which you could end up making some money with it. Of course, it might not make you rich, but may bring in some extra revenue into your pockets.

Collect all the old koozies that you have in your home and additionally offer to collect old koozies from neighbors and friends. Making use of the cushioning property of these old koozies, you can make small pillows out of them and sell them off at local fairs or on-line for very low cost since your material cost for the stuffing is practically nothing. You may also make stuffed animals such as teddy bears and other such animals for valentine’s day and similar occasions. There may be laws that disallow making toys for children using the material of the koozies as stuffing. But decorative items may fall under a different category. Another item that you can make using koozies as stuffing material is cushions for dinette chairs. By making and selling these items at a low enough price, you may end up making money with these koozies that may have been discarded after use. Additionally, you would be doing the environment a favor by acting green and everyone nowadays is capitalizing on re-using and recycling opportunities.

Once you have developed the process well and have developed a marketing strategy, you might be able to contact some of the koozies making companies and ask them if they will give you their koozies that have been rejected for quality control reasons and instead of throwing them away, they may be willing to have you take them away and thus you would end up with a steady flow of cheap raw material for your product. So there you are with a new idea that you can capitalize on using old can and bottle koozies.

Edmond D. asked:

Here in America, Budweiser beer is considered the very definition of a low-class, blue collar awful tasting beer. There is absolutely nothing “premium” about it here, either in image or in reality. It’s not even real beer–it’s made with rice, for god’s sake. Trust me, if you show up at your buddy’s house with a case of Bud, you’re likely to be laughed at as cheap and low-class. So my question is how can Europeans, who are so much smarter than dull-witted Americans (I’m sure you agree), be so easily manipulated by advertising into paying a lot of money for beer that tastes as if it were brewed in a horse?

clock
